Admission Requirements (Tentative)
IMPORTANT: The prerequisites for Baylor's Master of Physician Assistant Studies program are currently under development. However, the information listed below outlines the anticipated prerequisite requirements for the program and is intended to aid prospective students as they prepare for and consider submitting an application.
Degree Prerequisites
- Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or Canada prior to matriculation into the program
Grade Prerequisites
- Cumulative and science grade point averages of a 3.0 (4.0 scale)
- Grades below “C” in prerequisite courses will not be accepted
- If a prerequisite course is repeated, the credit hours assigned to the course may be counted only once in fulfilling the required number of hours. Both grades will be calculated into the cumulative and science GPA.
- If the cumulative GPA is less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, an applicant may still be eligible for admission if a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater has been achieved over the last 60 semester or 90 quarter hour credits of coursework.
Course Prerequisites
General information:
- All prerequisite coursework must be taken within 10 years of application to the program.
- All prerequisite coursework must be complete at the time of application.
Required prerequisite coursework:
(Note: All required course credits are listed as semester credit hours. Courses taken on a quarter/trimester credit hour basis must be equivalent in credits to meet the semester credit hours listed below. All prerequisite courses must have been taken at an accredited university in the U.S. or Canada.)
- Biology with lab: 6 credit hours
- Human anatomy with lab: 3 credit hours (comparative anatomy may not be substituted)
- Human physiology with lab: 3 credit hours (animal physiology or kinesiology may not be substituted)
- Microbiology with lab: 3 credit hours
- Organic chemistry with lab: 3 credit hours (general chemistry may not be substituted)
- Psychology: 3 credit hours
- Statistics: 3 credit hours
- Medical terminology: 1 credit hour (medical terminology may be completed online; courses taken for continuing education credit will not be accepted)
Testing Prerequisites
- Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) within the last five years from the application is required.
Letters of Recommendation
- Three letters of recommendation are required.
- At least one recommendation must come from a healthcare professional knowledgeable of the applicant’s performance in the clinical setting.
- At least one recommendation must come from a professional able to speak of the applicant’s academic capabilities.
Direct Healthcare Experience
- A minimum of 500 hours of direct healthcare experience (paid or volunteer) in the U.S. must be completed by all applicants prior to application.
- Clinical hours earned toward a degree or certificate are not applicable.
Other Admission Criteria
- Students must meet the minimal technical requirements for admission, continuation, and graduation.
- If invited, an interview is required.
